Cycling at the University

Cycle Facilities

A range of facilities are provided and maintained by the University to encourage active travel to campus, including cycle parking, showers and changing facilities.

Cycle Parking

We offer a variety of cycle parking across campus, this ranges from sheltered Sheffield Stands to swipe access storage shelters, and individual lockers. Contact Estates General Enquiries to arrange swipe access to the secure shelters, alternatively collect a key for the individual storage lockers from the main University Reception. View the location of the cycle parking spaces here.

Shower and Changing Facilities

There are a range of shower and changing facilities available for use by students, staff and visitors to the University. View the full list of shower and changing facilities The shower and changing facilities located in the Sport Centre on level 3 of the Student Central Building are open to staff, students and visitors who are not members of the gym. Speak to a member of staff on reception at the Sports Centre to gain access. 

 

Emergency Maintenance Equipment

The Sustainability Team have purchased a small pool of emergency bike maintenance equipment including: 

• Bike Pump
• Multi-tool
• Puncture kits

This equipment is located at the University Reception and can be borrowed free of charge by any staff or student on campus.

Abandoned Cycles Procedure

It is important that our buildings and cycle parking facilities are used correctly and safely. Where cycles are inappropriately parked or suspected to be abandoned they will be removed my Security Servces. For full details please read the Abandoned Cycles Procedure.

Cycle Safety

Cycling is a great way to stay active; here are a few hints and tips to keep you safe while cycling:

• Consider wearing a securely fastened helmet and hi-vis clothing. 
• All bikes should be fitted with a white front light, and a red rear light, this is a legal requirement in the dark and when lighting is poor.
• Be aware of other road users, using clear signals when necessary.
• Cyclists must obey traffic signs and light signals at all times, and must not use the pavement.

Cycle Security

•  We recommend that you register your bike with a national property databade, this will increase the likelihood of your cycle being returned to you in the unfortunate event of it being stolen.
• You could also fill in a Pedal Cycle Passport for your bicycle, as suggested by West Yorkshire Police. Either print off a copy, or collect one from PC Phil Hardy located in SB4/18. 
• Use a good quality D-lock to secure your bicycle, filling as much of the space within the D-lock with the bicycle. Where possible use two different types of lock. Always use the designated cycle parking facilities.
• Check your insurance! While your bicycle may be covered under your home contents insurance it is important to check the small print, many policies do not cover you away from home, and have a maximum bike value. If you aren't covered consider getting yourself and your bike insured.
• Remove any accessories, including lights from your bicycle when parked.

Cyclist Training Opportunities

The Sustainability Team are working to organise regular bike maintenance and cycle proficiency workshops, accessible to both staff and student cyclists. These will vary in difficulty, from beginner cycle training, to more in depth bike mechanics.

Staff Benefits for Cyclists

The University of Huddersfield's Bike User Group

The cycling community here at the University of Huddersfield have come together with the Sustainability Team to form a Bike User Group (BUG). The purpose of this group is to promote cycling at the University to new and existing cyclists, while working with the Sustainability Team to share ideas, concerns and to organise events. Members of the BUG vary from keen cyclists who commute regularily, to complete beginners who are building the confidence to cycle to work!

The BUG has designated Cycling Champions located in each buildig on campus to help orientate new cyclists on the routes and facilities on and around campus. View their profiles here.

Events

The Sustainability Team and Bike User Group will organise regular meetings and events to promote cycling here at The University. 

• Thursday 8th August was Bike to Work Day! The Sustainability Team and BUG members were on hand to talk bike security, maintenance and route planning, while rewarding cyclists with a free breakfast from international Kitchen! There was a special appearence from West Yorkshire Police who allowed staff members to have a go with the Electric Bikes used by the force! 

Planning your cycle route

If you live in West Yorkshire you can use the West Yorkshire Cycle Map proviced by Sustrans to plan your journey by bike.

Outside of West Yorkshire, and across the rest of the UK take a look at Cycling UK's Journey Planner, allowing you to plan your route depending on the journeys quietness, speed and distance.
