Big Al’s Magical Mystery Waste and Recycling Tour

Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the waste produced by an institution as big as our University? Do we recycle anything? What happens to the leftover food?
Join Big Al, as he will take you on a tour and unravel the mysteries of the complex waste flows on Campus. Find out how we reduce, reuse, recycle and responsibly dispose of waste. Visit the ground-breaking waste stations, see what happens the leftover coffee grounds from our outlets and learn how our food waste is turned into a biogas via anaerobic digestion. Recycling! Where do I start? Are you confused which bin to dispose your waste in?
Come and visit the Campus Support Waste Wombles and have a chat about the rigorous work they have accomplished in reducing waste on campus. Learn about the Universities complex waste flows, how and what we recycle on campus, and the future plans for how waste will be managed in your workspace.
Learn more about the upcoming ‘Waste Awareness week’ (Tuesday 25th-Thursday 27th April) where you can build your confidence on learning what waste, goes where and have a chat with our waste contractor ‘Suez’ to discover what happens to the waste when it leaves the university.
There will even be some give away goodies to help you remember how to manage your own waste.

Pioneering Research Facilities in the Laura Annie Willson Building Tour

Join the Technical Service Manager, Darren Sugden for a tour of the newly renovated Laura Annie Willson Building to witness a glimpse into the technology of the future.

The building provides a state-of-the-art location for scientists and engineers researching topics as diverse as ultra-precision manufacturing, virtual reality, internet of things (IoT), digital forensics, fluid sciences and electric vehicles. The tour will showcase the innovative “Smart House” – a two-storey domestic dwelling inside a laboratory in which research is taking place on a range of topics such as smart energy technologies; domestic environmental monitoring; new interfaces for home entertainment systems; and health care for assisted living. See the Institute of Railway Researchers ‘Harold’ testing loads on a rolling road, and UKRINN’s ‘Thomas’ as it analyses travel comfort with a motion simulator. Visit the robots in the advanced manufacturing lab, see the University ‘Team HARE’ being built ahead of racing day and visit the Music Technology Students mixing music. Prepare to be amazed!

Feeling a little stressed? Need a quick break from your workplace to clear you head?
Come and join the caring Campus Support Team as we will clear your mind and calm your soul. Be guided by the team as we take you along a calming circuit walk and show you the work the grounds team have achieved in replanting and extending the campus green areas. Amble down to the canal through the woodside area to see the bat and bird boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog houses. View the three available areas of allotments where you can adopt a planter and find secret spaces where you escape for a replenishing, relaxing lunch break.

Do you think about what you eat, or just eat for convenience? Can eating better, make you feel better?
Join two MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition students as they discuss the highlights and benefits of following a healthy eating/balanced diet. Learn how to design a meal plan that fits within busy student/staff schedules whilst still being cost effective.

Green Week: Volunteer Employers Meet and Greet

We are delighted to invite you to our ‘Green Week: Volunteer Employers Meet and Greet’ where we will be joined on campus with up to 15 voluntary employers for you to sit down with chat to find out more about the work they do
To coincide with Green Week all of the voluntary employers on campus will have a connection to sustainability or green jobs in the work that they do. Whether this be the circular economy of clothes and fashion, borrowing books, combat climate change, growing food or working with green spaces and the outdoors.
Some of the volunteer employers who will be joining us on the day will be Marsden Moor – National Trust, Kirklees Libraries, Oxfam, Eden’s Forest, the Scouts and many more.
Volunteering is a brilliant opportunity to boost your work experience and add interest to your CV for future employers. Through voluntary work you’ll develop and refine valuable soft skills such as resourcefulness, collaborative skills, and showing initiative and gives something back to the local community – showing prospective employers you are motivated, passionate, and driven.
Come along, boost your CV, practice your networking skills, learn something new, meet some interesting people… and possibly even sign up as a green volunteer!

'Weed and Re-seed' the Kitchen Herb Garden

Enjoy gardening and growing your own fresh herbs to cook with?
Join Barry, the Campus Support Grounds Maintenance Lead, as we 'Weed and re-seed' our Kitchen Herb Garden. Ask an expert your gardening and herb growing questions, and take home a herb and recipe, to grow then cook yourself a healthy, tasty meal.
All tools and equipment will be provided.
