Job role

I'm Subject Area Leader for Computing and Information Systems in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield. I am also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and an Associate Member of the Northern Productivity Hub.

About

I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2015 as a Research Assistant and served subsequently as a Research Fellow, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. My teaching and research interests fall within the field of Artificial Intelligence. On the teaching side, I am passionate about developing the next generation of computer scientists and artificial intelligence engineers who will spearhead the next phases of the AI revolution we are witnessing. On the research side, I am driven by the need for intelligent solutions that not only provide value to businesses and users but also deliver explainable decisions that can support positive transformation at business and society levels.

I have taught and led a wide range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in face-to-face and distance learning mode, primarily on Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering. I’ve also led the development of new modules and courses in Artificial Intelligence, including modules on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning and Large-Scale Software Engineering and our BSc(Hons) Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence courses. I’ve supervised students in a wide range of projects for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes.

Research

My research within Artificial Intelligence has mainly focused on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Machine Learning and Explainability, as well as applications in Supply Chains, Smart Homes, Service-oriented Computing and Cloud Computing. I have secured more than £1m worth of funding as PI and co-I from Innovate UK and UKRI. I have authored over 50 papers in books, journals, and conference and workshop proceedings and my research has received more than 1700 citations. I have also acted as a reviewer for over 60 international journals, conferences and workshops.

PhD in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece – Thesis Title: A Novel Specification and Composition Language for Services.

MSc in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece – Thesis Title: The Frame Problem in Web Service Specifications.

DiplEng (equivalent to Meng) in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the Technical University of Crete, Greece.

Job role

I’m a Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security at the School of Computing and Engineering. I am also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Cyber Security. 

About

I started working at the University of Huddersfield in 2015 as a Teaching Assistant while completing my PhD at the University. Since then, I have progressed through various roles as a Research Fellow, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer.  

My teaching and research interests are mainly centred around cyber security and digital forensics, along with artificial intelligence. I'm passionate about preparing the next generation of cyber security professionals to defend against the growing array of cyber threats and address the evolving challenges in investigating complex crimes in the digital world.  

I have led and taught a wide range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in face-to-face and distance learning mode, primarily on cyber security, digital forensics, artificial intelligence, and software development.  

In my role as Deputy Director for the Centre for Cyber Security, I shape the research agenda and develop collaborations with industry partners and academics from other national and international universities.  

I supervise students in a wide range of projects for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research programmes.  

In my spare time, I pursue my passion for mixed martial arts, which helps me stay physically active. I also have a deep interest in cars, including their design, performance, and mechanics.  

Research  

My current research interest is in developing intelligent systems for cybersecurity and digital forensics. This involves various research areas such as security information and event management (SIEM), access control and authentication, vulnerability assessment, anomaly detection, and image forensics.  

My focus is on developing security solutions that not only protect governments, businesses and users but also ensure transparency and accountability, contributing to a safer society. What I appreciate most about cyber security is its dynamic nature; there are always new developments, challenges, and opportunities to learn and teach. 

My research is determined to address the shortage of security expertise and knowledge by developing automated software tools that can keep the digital infrastructure secure against modern malicious attacks. 

I’m a frequent reviewer for various journals and conferences. I’ve also secured government funded projects (Innovate UK, DCMS, and DASA), with colleagues, to perform commercial research and development.

PhD in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Huddersfield. Thesis “Discovering and Utilising Expert Knowledge from Security Event Logs”.  

Master’s degree in Advanced Computer Science from the University of Huddersfield.  

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology, Pakistan.
