Advice regarding smart speakers and other ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) devices
Data suggests that at least 50% of homes own at least one smart speaker, and most people own a smart phone. Televisions and other home appliances are being infused with ‘smart’ technology. Typically, these devices can listen to commands to streamline interactions from their users. This makes for a modern user experience but does raise questions about confidentiality when your home is also your workplace.
If you are working from home, we strongly advise that, when discussing sensitive University information, you ensure that you mute the microphone on any smart devices in the area or turn the devices off to prevent anything said being captured.
Smart devices capture and transfer audio to data centres, likely outside of the UK, to process spoken commands. This happens continuously; not only when you issue your 'command/activation’ word. While smart device manufacturers report that data protection and user privacy is a primary concern and well managed, there is evidence that suggests otherwise and Computing Services suggest a cautious, rational approach.
