DJ, techno pioneer and electronic musician Richie Hawtin will visit the University of Huddersfield for an onstage discussion with music and music technology researchers and students on 17 October 11am-12:30pm.

The British-Canadian artist, who received an honorary doctorate from the University in 2015, will be in conversation with Pierre Griscelli, the winner of the Richie Hawtin PhD Scholarship in Electronic Music, Cultures and Production that was launched earlier this year and take questions from those in attendance.

Richie Hawtin is a pioneering electronic musician who rose to fame in the emergence and boom of techno music in the early 1990s, cutting his teeth in the scene’s Detroit clubs and warehouse parties. He was instrumental in the emergence of minimal techno, and his own recordings and iconic albums as Plastikman and F.U.S.E., along with record labels Plus 8 and M-nus, are part of electronic music folklore. He has designed his own DJ mixer (MODEL 1 from PLAYdifferently); the Bullfrog educational synthesiser (with Erica Synths); created innovative music technology apps; is the co-founder of the electronic retail Beatport platform; responsible for the shift from physical to digital DJing and also has his own sake brand (ENTER.Sake and Sake 36).

He took techno and technology to American college campuses with hisCNTRL tour, has written music for a Winter Olympics, collaborated with Anish Kapoor, Andreas Gursky and, most recently, with Raf Simons for Prada. After collaborating with University of Huddersfield researchers and students, he was awarded a doctorate in 2015, and has visited the University several times since to work with music technology and production students. This year the University launched the Richie Hawtin Research Scholarship in Electronic Dance Music Production, and this event will see Richie have a live onstage discussion with researchers in Music and Music Technology, alongside the holder of the scholarship, Pierre Griscelli.
