QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is a prestigious rating system that provides a detailed look at an institution enabling potential students to identify its strengths.
We were delighted to be named as one of the world’s top universities in nine subjects in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The 2023 edition was released in March and names the world’s best universities for study in 54 academic disciplines.
The nine subjects where the University of Huddersfield was named among the world’s top universities are:
- Performing Arts (27th globally and 9th in the UK)
- Communication & Media Studies (in the top 150 in the world)
- Petroleum Engineering,
- Education,
- English Language & Literature (in the top 300 in the world for English Language and Education and Training)
- Sociology,
- Mechanical Engineering,
- Aeronautical & Manufacturing,
- Business & Management Studies,
- Computer Science & Information Systems.
The University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Alistair Sambell, was delighted by the results, said:

A five-star institution
In 2020 QS gave us an overall 5 Star Rating, which is the QS rating of Excellent.
This international benchmarking system judges Five Star universities as world-class in areas such as Teaching, Employability, Facilities, Innovation, Internationalisation and Inclusiveness.
