Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko, whose critically acclaimed CHORNOBYLDORF. Archaeological opera in seven novels opened hcmf// 2022, are an award-winning composer duo from Ukraine. They have been collaborating as composers, stage directors and librettists in the field of contemporary opera and new music theatre since 2015, exploring the boundaries and borders of this genre and moving beyond conventional venues to use landscapes, nuclear power stations, empty libraries and museums as their stage.

During the course of this lecture-presentation, Grygoriv and Razumeiko will discuss and show video fragments from three of their operas: CHORNOBYLDORF. Archaeological opera in seven novelsOPERA LINGUA, music theatre in seven books; and GENESIS, opera of memory in 13 mise-en-scene.

Grygoriv and Razumeiko live and work in Kyiv, Ukraine, where their laboratory for contemporary opera ‘Opera Aperta’ is based, and have presented their pieces as part of Prototype Festival in New York, Musiktheatertage in Vienna, O. Festival in Rotterdam and hcmf// in the UK. On Monday 1 May 2023, CHORNOBYLDORF will be performed in Liverpool as part of EuroFestival, an exciting, thought-provoking programme of art and culture taking over Liverpool in the lead up to The Eurovision Song Contest made possible through a partnership with the British Council.
