It's not as easy as it looks - Police decision making in serious crime

Wednesday 11 May, 5pm - 6pm

The UK public continue to be fascinated by both real-life police investigations and with the plethora of different fictional representations available.

One aspect of this fascination is with the detectives/investigators themselves and how they manage to 'crack' seemingly impossible cases (often all within a two-hour episode). In real-life, often police investigators and their criminal investigations are not as clear-cut or as easily solved with a lack of evidence, erroneous investigative decision making, and bad luck often acting as the villains of the piece.

This session sees the coming together of a serving police investigator and a leading academic researcher in police decision making, to discuss some of the realities of conducting criminal investigations into serious crimes, the kinds of decisions that have to be made and some common pitfalls and traps that can produce 'investigative noise’ which can have a negative effect on the decision making of those involved in investigating serious crime.

Jason will be discussing this topic with Detective Inspector John Moore, West Yorkshire Police.
