Wednesday 9 March is National No Smoking Day and this year we are asking everyone to focus on the message that smokers shouldn’t give up on giving up.  If you are a smoker, this is a perfect opportunity to stop smoking once and for all, and look forward to a positive, smoke free future.

9 March is the day to put smoking behind you. Research shows that smokers who quit for 6 weeks or more are happier and experience less anxiety and depression than those who carry on smoking.  People who have quit smoking for a year are happier than those who continue to smoke.

There are lots of other reasons to stop smoking:

  • You will improve your health. Quitting smoking lowers your risk of diabetes, lets blood vessels work better, and helps your heart and lungs. Life expectancy for smokers is at least 10 years shorter than that of non-smokers. Quitting smoking before the age of 40 reduces the risk of dying from smoking-related disease by about 90%.
  • You will save money. The average smoker has 13 cigarettes a day, which works out as 364 cigarettes a month. That's £141 a month and £1,696 a year that you could be saving by not smoking.
  •  You will protect the health of those around you. By not exposing those around you to second-hand smoke, you will reduce the chances of them suffering from bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma attacks, meningitis and ear infections.

Quitting isn’t always easy but getting the right stop smoking aids and support can stop you feeling like you need a cigarette all the time.
