The University’s Bahraini Society hosted National Day celebration in December on campus.

All students and staff were invited along to look at their cultural tables and try some middle eastern snacks. There were opportunities to look at traditional dress, board games and have your name written in Arabic. The event was part of a term of global campus events that provide students with the chance to showcase their culture and allow other students to understand a little more.

Bahrain Society member, Marwa Alabbassi, who is studying a PhD in Psychology said, “As a research student in the UK, I rarely get the opportunity to participate in campus activities which is why I feel incredibly grateful for being able to join in the preparation and delivery of our Bahraini National Day Event.  My team and I wanted to introduce the University’s community to the culture and traditions of the Kingdom of Bahrain and provide them with the opportunity to experience Bahrain through our traditional clothes, music, food, and souvenirs in the form of customized Arabic calligraphy, pins, and personalized photo shoots. We were overjoyed with the number of visitors and the genuine interest staff and students showed in learning about the Kingdom of Bahrain. My favourite part about the event was the fruitful conversations with the visitors through which I was able to share my heritage and learn about other cultures and traditions.”

International Student Experience Manager, Alan Tobi said; “ It was very pleasing to see so many students visit the event and a positive conclusion to the end of term 1 for campus events. Our Bahraini students spent a lot of time to set up their event and was important to them to share their culture while making new friends and learning from other students. The University is committed to the student experience and the integration of its student body. Events like this show how happy our students are to be given opportunity of representation while making new friendship groups.
