17 May is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHoBiT). The day is marked worldwide and was created in 2004 as a response to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people, as well as all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
The date of 17 May was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The day represents a major global landmark to draw the attention to the stigma and discrimination faced by those who identify as LGBT+ in the world today.
This year’s IDAHoBiT theme is “Together: Resisting, Supporting, Healing!” - this powerful theme was chosen due to the recent challenges that the word has faced this past year. You can read more about it on the official May 17 website.
To mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHoBiT), the LGBT+ Pride flag will be flown outside St Paul’s Hall today in support of our LGBTQI+ community.
