The University has offices in three locations across China. Headed up by alumni, Peter Chen there are nine staff in total across Beijing head office, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Many of the staff working in the office are also Huddersfield alumni or have studied in the UK. In 2019 we celebrated 10 years of operations in China.
The international recruitment strategy for China has been highly successful in previous years until the recent events of the global pandemic. On average 300 - 400 new students were recruited to the University through partnerships mainly providing advanced entry into the second or final year of undergraduate programmes. Colleagues in China maintain and relationships with the students and their teachers before, during and after they apply to study at Huddersfield. They do this using resources such as emails, phone calls and social media networking all in the local language.
The key things about Huddersfield for our Chinese students are:
- Relevant courses offered (internationally recognised and accredited)
- Reputation (TEF Gold, some high subject ranking courses, teaching support/student experience)
- Location (safety, cost of living, tuition fees)
A major part of the work of the China Office is also supporting and facilitating outward visits by staff from Huddersfield to meet with partners, and their students to maintain these relationships and discuss other opportunities for collaboration. The partners are respected HEIs in China. The China office works with the Ministry of Education initiatives and is on the approved list of overseas institutions of the China Scholarship Council. Traditionally only research-based Russell Group universities feature on this list.
The China Office has also been instrumental in helping to set up a Confucious Institute on campus which will be opening this coming October.
Staff in the in-country offices are looking forward to a post Covid-19 period where face to face meetings and events can take place.
