Metrology Hub PhD Student reaches final in Additive World 2020 Design Challenge

Younes Chahid has reached the last three in the student category of this year’s Additive World Design Challenge.  The competition, launched and run by Additive Industries, aims to inspire designs from many areas of manufacturing to develop dedicated applications for industrial 3D printing.

Younes’ submission demonstrates how additive manufacturing can be applied to improve clinical outcomes in hip replacement surgery.  His redesign of a hip implant stem could greatly reduce bone resorption and the need for revision surgeries. The new design of the hip implant system has many unique features including density and thickness distribution optimisation to reduce the stress shielding and increase osseointegration.

The final of the competition, which attracted a record number of contestants, will take place in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in April.
