School of Computing and Engineering Appoints New Acting Head of Department
The University of Huddersfield is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Leigh Fleming as the new Acting Head of the Department of Engineering & Technology in the School of Computing and Engineering. Dr. Fleming steps into this leadership role following the tenure of Professor Artur Jaworski, who will be transitioning from his position to focus exclusively on his research pursuits after several years of dedicated service.
During his tenure as Head of Department, Professor Jaworski exhibited exceptional leadership, driving innovation and fostering a culture of educational transformation. His introduction of activity-based learning (EnABLE) and the Smart Applied Innovation Lab (SAIL) has had a profound impact on the department's educational landscape.
Stepping into her new role, Dr. Fleming brings a wealth of expertise and experience. With a distinguished academic background and a proven track record in research and innovation, Dr. Fleming is well-poised to lead the Department of Engineering & Technology into a new era of excellence.
Dr Fleming is a graduate of the University herself, having completed both her BEng and PhD within the department. She is passionate about ensuring everyone has access to world class education to develop as professionals, having experienced the transformative effect of higher education herself. Dr. Fleming's research interests lie in the application of metrology to novel surface characterisation, particularly focused on skin interfaces. This research holds crucial implications for wound care, pressure area management, and pressure ulcer prevention. Additionally, her work extends to the development and assessment of assistive technologies aimed at enhancing health-related quality of life.
As Dr. Fleming assumes the role of Acting Head of Department, she makes history by becoming the first female to hold this position in the School of Computing and Engineering. Her strong leadership qualities, dedication and outstanding contributions to academia have earned her this significant milestone. For several years, Dr. Fleming has also served as the Director of Home Recruitment, demonstrating exceptional strategic acumen and a keen understanding of student recruitment dynamics.
