Around 1,300 students took part in Global Week celebrations on campus as part of the University’s 2025 programme designed to celebrate different cultures.

The five-day schedule provided a wide variety of free events for both UK and international students to come together, share in each other’s cultures and showcase the University’s global reputation.

There was a range of music, dance, sport and food on offer throughout Global Week across multiple venues on campus.

Popular events included a Global Fashion Show which showcased clothes from around the world and a Global Food and Culture Festival offering an international food experience – both hosted by the University’s global societies and students.

A World of Sports Tournament featured sports such as badminton, table tennis and basketball and a number of teams took part in a busy Futsal Tournament.

Other events to feature in the week-long celebrations included a focus on K-Pop music, a Welcome to Yorkshire day of culture and music, a cooking demonstration and chance to have a go at making a fruit crumble, an international film night, as well as a seaside trip to Whitby.

Prior to Global Week, there were celebrations on campus to mark the Lunar New Year and usher in the Year of the Snake.

The Spring Festival celebrations were hosted by the University’s Chinese, Vietnamese and Hong Kong societies plus the Huddersfield Confucius Institute.

They included the return of the Chinese Evening Gala hosted by the University’s Chinese Society, which included cultural activities, performances and traditional dress. This was attended by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan, and the Pro Vice-Chancellor for International Professor Alistair Sambell, as well as a delegation from the Chinese Consulate in Manchester.

Alan Tobi, International Student Experience Manager, commented: “A very busy month for global student activities on campus. These events are very important to our students, as shown in the attendance, contributing to the student experience at the University. A personal thank you to every single student who contributed and attended, making the week very special.”

There are currently around 4,500 international students from more than 100 countries studying at the University of Huddersfield.
