Law students at the University of Huddersfield attended a Careers Fair on campus in a bid to enhance their professional and personal development.
The event, organised by the University’s Law School, gave students the opportunity to network with a range of local, regional and national law firms, as well as nearby local authorities.
The Law Careers Fair was held in the Oastler Building with law firms attending in order to share their expertise to help students from all four years of the University’s law degrees regarding their career options after graduation. Many of the exhibitors were alumni of the Law School.
The day began with a panel talk, led by the organiser of the Careers Fair, Natalie Prowse, who is the undergraduate Course Leader in the Law School. Guest speakers were James Burgess from Eaton Smith Solicitors, Amy Clowery from Switalskis Solicitors and Sharn Samra, a barrister with Broadway House Chambers.
The panel emphasised to students that all three of the speakers had taken a different route into the law and were from a range of legal specialisms, highlighting the diverse nature of the profession. This also give students valuable insight into the variety of career opportunities they can aim for.
After the talk, students moved into the Law Careers Fair where law firms were available to provide students with important knowledge to help begin their own legal careers, including tips to enhance their employability within the profession.
Students were thankful for the guidance given to them by firms, including advice on how to speak professionally to people in the profession and what to do regarding the next steps of their career.
Natalie Prowse, Course Leader and Senior Law Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield commented: “The University of Huddersfield’s Law Careers Fair was a great experience for our students who gained lots of tips and advice from exhibitors. It was a pleasure to hear amazing feedback from exhibitors about the conversations that they shared with our Law students.”
A total of 20 established law firms attended the event including Ramsdens Solicitors, Pinsent Masons, First4InjuryClaims and Schofield Sweeney, as well as representatives of the HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
The firms were extremely helpful to the students in giving them an idea of what different roles they could apply for and pulling insightful advice from their own experience to widen law students’ prospects.
Local authorities, Leeds City Council and Wakefield Council made students aware of the opportunities available to them regarding working in a legal position for a local authority.
The Law Careers Fair, which was first held in 2022, took place on 14 February.
