A new degree course is launching at the University of Huddersfield combining Childhood, Education and Inclusion.
The BA(Hons) will be available to students from September 2025 for the first time and has been created in response to demand from the sector for professionals with a range of skills to facilitate inclusive spaces for children and young people.
The course itself is for those passionate about making a real difference in the lives of children, young people and their families. Subsequent career paths include the education, health and social care sectors.
One of the unique aspects of this new degree course is its flexibility. After a core year, where students will develop an understanding of the wider key concepts in childhood studies, one of three routes can be chosen: education; inclusion; or working with children and families.
Students will have the option to cover areas such as neurodiversity and autism; supporting social, emotional and mental health in education; and mentoring and counselling.
They will also gain an insight into children’s voices, their wellbeing and development, social policy, children’s rights, youth identities and cultures, supporting inclusion and safeguarding vulnerable children, young people and families.
The course is run by a team of experienced tutors within the University’s School of Education.
Dr Lindsey Watson, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader commented: "I am excited to be leading this new degree and look forward to supporting the development of expert practitioners who will positively influence the lives of children, young people and their families. The course team ensures our students are advocates for children and young people's voices."
In their second year, students are expected to undertake a work-based placement to gain real-world experience, which alongside their study will equip them for a fulfilling career.
Upon completion of the three-year degree, students may look to gain Qualified Teacher Status through studying Primary, Secondary or SEND Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses. Students may also advance to study other specialised fields, such as social work and child nursing.
