The University of Huddersfield’s commitment to reducing inequalities at home and abroad has been recognised by an outstanding result in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for 2024.

Huddersfield is ranked at number 2 in the world in the category Sustainable Development Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities, with over 1,100 universities having submitted evidence for THE 2024. It is the highest ranked of 55 UK institutions named in the Reduced Inequalities category.

The methodology used by THE assessed Huddersfield’s performance in:

  • Research on reduced inequalities
  • First-generation students
  • International students from developing countries
  • Students and staff with disabilities
  • Measures against discrimination

“Over half of our undergraduates come from families where they will be the first to attain a degree, so this excellent result in the THE Impact Rankings is a superb reflection of the university’s hard work to help widen opportunities for all our under- and postgraduates,” says Professor Tim Thornton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

“We are also proud to welcome so many students from low and low-middle income countries in the developing world. And the research carried out at the university also has an impact beyond our shores. In the last year, for example, we have hosted a seminar on human rights reparations in the Global South, and we have also won a substantial grant from Jersey Overseas Aid to work with rural communities in Ethiopia that will support conservation by developing supply chains for forest products.

“We also offer extensive support to students with disabilities, from meeting with a disability advisor on applicant recruitment days through to personal learning support plans. It is vital that everyone who studies at the University of Huddersfield has the best possible chance for their careers after their time here, so we are delighted with how these latest THE Impact Rankings reflect that.”

Huddersfield has maintained its place in the top 200 of THE’s overall Impact rankings, which this year has surveyed 1,963 institutions, nearly 400 more than in 2023.

The university is also in the top 200 of the new for Sustainable Development Goal 11 category, Sustainable Cities and Communities, which assesses universities that promote urban sustainability.  We have extensively pedestrianised and landscaped large parts of our campus and are taking further measures to reduce travel-related greenhouse gas emissions. All new buildings, including the under-construction Daphne Steele Building on the National Health Innovation Campus, will be built to the WELL Building Standard.
