Huddersfield named Most Improved University in UK in 2025 QS World Rankings

The University of Huddersfield has surged in the 2025 QS World University Rankings making it the Most Improved University in the UK.

The University’s reputation with employers and among academics around the world has seen it make significant progress in the latest overall rankings compiled annually by QS.

It is now on the brink of the top 500, having placed in 501st position and among the very best institutions worldwide. This constitutes a 66-place rise from last year’s 567th ranking position.

As a result, the University has been named the Most Improved University in the United Kingdom by QS and is ranked 49th among UK universities. Institutions receiving this award have shown the most improvement in their ranking over a five-year period.

Over the last three years, the University has risen up the rankings of the global institutions surveyed by more than 200 places. Huddersfield’s performance in the various categories, methodologies and surveys indicates how it has become a university of international renown and a destination for researchers from around the world.

The University ranked highly in the indicators for International Students, Sustainability, International Faculty and International Research Network.

Earlier this year, the University of Huddersfield was also named as one of the world’s top universities across thirteen different subjects with some subjects ranked as high as 20th (Music) and 32nd (Performing Arts) in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

To have been recognised by QS as the ‘Most Improved’ university in the United Kingdom is especially satisfying.”

The 21st edition of the QS World University Rankings features 1,503 institutions across 106 locations and is the only ranking of its kind to emphasise employability and sustainability.

Of the universities surveyed, there were 21 new entrants and 461 institutions rising in the rankings. When it came to universities moving up in the ranks, the UK was third with a total of 20 improving institutions, after China with 48 and India with 28.

In addition, 90 UK universities are included in the rankings, with 20 climbing – including Huddersfield, 52 dropping and 18 remaining stable within their rank or band.

Reputation indicators draw on the analysis of 17.5m academic papers and expert opinions of more than 240,000 academics and employers.
