The University of Huddersfield Law School recently hosted its annual Professional Mentoring and Networking event, connecting Law students with professional mentors for career guidance.

Taking place in the Oastler Building on Thursday 11th January, the launch event for the Professional and Mentoring Networking scheme featured the participation of law firms from various legal specialities and sizes. From local firms such as Ramsdens, Ridley & Hall, and Chadwick Lawrence, to national firms including Pinsent Masons, Shoosmiths and Womble Bond Dickinson in attendance.

Prior to the event, 40 Year 3 and 4 Law students engaged in a training session to equip themselves for the experience. At the event, students engaged in professional networking with 40 lawyers, with many of whom are alumni of the Law School. The professional atmosphere was further heightened by a spread of canapes and drinks to create an authentic networking experience.

An innovative aspect of the event was the ‘speed dating’ format where students and lawyers were paired up for rapid exchanges. Lawyers shared insights on job applications and provided tips for successful interviews.

Course Leader Natalie Prowse organised the experience that not only enriches the students’ academic journeys but significantly boosts employability prospects in the legal world. The Law School has provided this invaluable opportunity for students for the past 15 years, recognising the significance of networking as a skill in successful legal careers.

Toni Merrington, Criminal Lawyer at Tyler Hoffman commented:

It is a great opportunity to meet the next generation of legal talent and help them at the start of their careers.

Students selected their preferred mentors and have now been paired with one of their top three choices. Over the upcoming term, mentors are set to offer valuable CV advice and provide guidance through at least one in-person or virtual meeting.

Sophie Ryan Marrison of Best Solicitors Online, reflecting on her participation in the scheme as a student, said:

It is great to be invited back as a mentor. It has made me realise how much I have to offer to students!

The annual scheme aligns with The University of Huddersfield’s commitment to not only create an enriching learning environment for students but also prepare them for thriving careers in the legal world. The university takes pride in its partnerships with law firms, which are committed to motivating future legal professionals. The Law School is dedicated to organising similar events in the future that aim to inspire students and create connections with professionals.
