The School of Human and Health Sciences has launched an exciting opportunity to study via the new Health Foundation Pathway.

Through this Pathway students will study Year 0 (Foundation Year) of the Health and Social Care with Foundation Year BSc (Hons), a four-year course.

This Pathway offers an alternative route into higher education and allows students to develop the skills and knowledge for academic success.

Successfully completing Year 0 of the Health and Social Care with Foundation Year BSc (Hons) gives students the chance to apply for Year 1 of a number of other courses including criminology, health professions, psychology, and sport. There is also the opportunity to progress, after completing the four-year course, into diverse careers including youth work, housing, domestic violence, social prescribing, and drug and alcohol support.

In Year 0, students will complete the following  five modules:

  • Preparing for Study: Foundations for Academic Success
  • Preparing for Study: Research Project
  • Working with People
  • The Context of Health and Social Care
  • Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

Dr Sara Eastburn, Acting Head of Department for Allied Health Professions, Sport and Exercise, said, "The School is tremendously excited about launching the new Health Foundation Pathway in September 2024. This Pathway has been developed collaboratively by colleagues from across the School, including academic and professional services colleagues, the Public Partnership Group and expert academic skills tutors. Uniquely, it provides a scaffolded pathway that allows students to begin their higher education journey sooner than they might do otherwise.

Dr Sara Eastburn

Acting Head of Department for Allied Health Professions, Sport and Exercise

"Students on the Pathway will be supported in their development of robust learning and study skills required for successful higher education. They will learn many key skills and principles that both challenge and facilitate broad issues across health and social care. They will have the opportunity to begin to explore these from the perspectives of the users."

"We hope that this Pathway will be attractive to anybody exploring study and careers options across health, social care, sport, criminology and psychology, and we look forward to welcoming our inaugural cohort of students in September."
