The impact made by the University of Huddersfield’s wellbeing service Get Set Goal has been recognised with a prestigious national award.
Get Set Goal, part of the University of Huddersfield’s Health and Wellbeing Academy, has won a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) from higher education charity Advance HE. It is an award given to collaborative work that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning and highlights the role of teamwork in UK higher education.
Get Set Goal is an innovative community health and wellbeing service which works with local agencies to help address health inequalities in some of the most challenging socio-economic areas in the UK.
The service is led by Clinical Services Manager Sarah Shaw, with a multi-professional team including Clinical Services Facilitator Dr Sarah Batt, Practice Assessor and Head of Division (Mental Health) Donna Kemp, and Executive Project Officer Hannah Sladdin.
Get Set Goal was created to address placement deficits for mental health nurses, creating community-based experiences with a focus on health inequities. Students and staff manage the service collaboratively, promoting health and wellbeing through community events, including health-check clinics, one to one wellbeing coaching sessions helping people manage their mental and physical health, wellbeing workshops and Restart a Heart training, a national resuscitation education scheme.
Since its launch in 2022, nearly 200 students have engaged in community placements through Get Set Goal, working with over 100 organisations in the region which include third sector organisations, voluntary groups and local primary and secondary healthcare providers.
Most recently Get Set Goal has also been supporting the ‘Find Out How You Really Are ’ initiative, instigated by NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, which is working with several local and national organisations including Diabetes UK, Stroke Association and Pumping Marvellous as well as Get Set Goal.
As part of this initiative, the students are providing free health checks to cricket fans at Headingley and rugby league fans at Huddersfield Giants, Castleford Tigers, Bradford Bulls and Halifax Panthers.
Sarah Shaw commented, “Get Set Goal is an impactful initiative, making a real difference to local communities and student learning. I am proud of the relationships nurtured with other health and social care providers. But mostly, the staff are in awe of how our students respond to such a novel placement. They inspire us every day by their enthusiasm, ideas, creativity and growth whilst in Get Set Goal.”
Alison Johns, Advance HE Chief Executive said, “I am delighted to announce this year’s winners of the National Teaching Fellowship and Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence.
“Advance HE has the privilege of running these prestigious awards on behalf of the sector and we are extremely proud of the way these teams and individuals enhance the quality of teaching in higher education.
“We know that higher education has the power to transform lives but this doesn’t happen by default. Outstanding teaching is the result of knowledge, commitment, passion, energy and creativity. All of these 2024 winners demonstrate these attributes and put them into practice with excellent results.
“It is vital for student success that we invest in higher education teaching and promote the value of excellence."
