Huddersfield wins at Yorkshire Universities Sports Awards

Bringing students together over sports has helped the University of Huddersfield win the prize for Great Event at the Yorkshire University Sports Awards.

The University’s six schools competed in volleyball, table tennis and badminton in the first Inter-Schools Sports Tournament – won by Computing and Engineering – in December 2022.

Shortlisted alongside events involving Hull, Sheffield, York and Leeds Beckett, Huddersfield won the Great Event award at a ceremony in Hull.

Also recognised at the Awards Ceremony was second year Business and Management student Shaheer Waheb, who was shortlisted for the Great Contribution category for his efforts in establishing the Open Gym and Open Sports sessions that has an increased disabled students' physical activity levels.

"We're delighted the Inter-Schools Cup and World of Sports Week has been recognised as the best student focused sporting set of events across all of the 11 Yorkshire Universities,” said Sid Fletcher, Sports and Participation Manager.

“This recognition shows the benefits of successful partnership working, in this instance with our colleagues from the International Student Experience team who successfully co-designed and delivered these events alongside ActiveHud staff and student activators."

Alan Tobi, International Student Experience Manager, added, “It is a fantastic achievement to be nominated and bring back the award against such institutions and to be recognised for all the hard work that we are doing at Huddersfield to improve the student experience.

“The sports tournaments that we host in collaboration with Active Hud shows what can be done to give our students across the campus the opportunity to come together and form friendships through their love of sport. The Inter-School tournament will be back in 2023/24 and will be bigger and better.”
