The University of Huddersfield is incredibly proud to announce that it has achieved a prestigious silver award and been ranked within the top 100 Employers for the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) 2023.
Stonewall, Europe’s largest charity for lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer rights, has launched its Top 100 Employers List, and the University of Huddersfield was recognised for its work on supporting LGBTQ+ staff to be themselves at work.
Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers 2023 list recognises exceptional employers who are committed to supporting their LGBTQ+ staff. It is the UK’s leading ranking of employers from public, private and third sectors on how inclusive their workplaces are. Creating inclusive environments makes the workplace safer and better for everyone – not just LGBTQ+ people.
Over the past year, the University of Huddersfield has undertaken significant strides towards creating an inclusive working environment. The University is ranked 97th of employers in all sectors who took part – up from a ranking of 277 in 2022.
Nancy Kelley, CEO of Stonewall (she/her) said:
‘It’s been fantastic to see all of the work put in by the University of Huddersfield over the past year to create a workplace where LGBTQ+ staff feel free to thrive as themselves. For many of us, the majority of our time is spent at work, so if we have to hide who we are it can take an enormous personal toll and hold us back from fulfilling our true potential.
“Creating environments where we can all feel comfortable makes our workplaces a safer, better and friendlier place for everyone and helps staff be proud of who they are. We’re incredibly proud to see so many new entrants from a range of sectors on this year’s list, who are committed to making LGBTQ+ people’s lives better.”
Olivia Briddon (she/her), Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager said:
“We are delighted with this result. We work hard at the University of Huddersfield to develop and encourage an environment in which our LGBTQ+ students and staff know they have the freedom to be themselves at work or in their studies. I am very proud that our success in this has received recognition from Stonewall, to receive a silver award and feature in the Top 100 Employers is recognition of the considerable work we have done to raise the profile of LGBTQ+ equality across the University.
“All work in this area is carried out in partnership with the LGBTQI+ staff network, and this acknowledgement is testament to the hard work of all involved who have helped on this journey.”
