Dr Stefano Grillini visits Huddersfield Business School

We were delighted to welcome Dr Stefano Grillini to Huddersfield Business School on the 20th of March 2023 to deliver sessions to our undergraduate and postgraduate students, and staff.

Stefano is a Visiting Research Fellow at Northern Productivity Hub (NPH) - a multidisciplinary research centre at the university, and on Monday 20th March 2023 he visited campus to share his expertise with both students and staff. Huddersfield Business School regularly welcomes Visiting Research Fellows to the school to collaborate on a variety of activities. All our Visiting Research Fellows specialise in different business fields and have a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will contribute to not only the development of our students but also the school’s research culture.

Dr Stefano works as a Portfolio Risk Manager at the EMEA headquarters of Morgan Stanley, serves as Managing Director and Board member of AST SpA - a company in the Italian hospitality sector, and is the Head of the Greentech Research Group at FattiDiAlgos - a non-profit organisation involved in communicating knowledge to bridge the gap between finance and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He obtained his PhD in Finance in 2019 and an MSc in Finance from the University of Bradford, where he previously worked as a full-time Associate Lecturer in Economics and Finance and Programme Leader of MSc Financial Management. Stefano has teaching experience at all levels within universities including MBA, MSc, and BSc.

Stefano’s research interests include empirical asset pricing, multifactor models, liquidity, and climate risk. He has an extensive publishing record for international academic journals, including the International Review of Financial Analysis and Economics Letters.

Dr Stefano visited Huddersfield Business School to deliver a series of talks and guest lectures to students and staff on Monday 20th March 2023. Stefano presented to undergraduate students in the form of a guest lecture, where he covered his everyday life in investment banking and shared useful tips for students aiming toward a career in finance. He discussed the role of investment banks, used current, and past, real-life examples of the financial crisis and explained the risks that banks take, leaving it open for students to ask him questions at the end of the session.

Stefano also presented a talk to the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics, and the Northern Productivity Hub on Time-Varying Aversion to Climate Risk: Long run-determinants and the Covid-19 pandemic. The Northern Productivity Hub (NPH) is a multidisciplinary research centre that aims to establish itself as a leading research centre and a key player in developing productivity and performance, across an array of organisations through the application of theoretical knowledge in its key research themes. Stefano’s talk provoked lots of thoughts and questions from the audience and he also got the opportunity to explain his research in depth.

Dr Stefano’s session for Postgraduate Research (PGR) students had a more technical focus in comparison to the undergraduate sessions. In his talk, Stefano covered risk models in finance and practical tips for a career in risk. Stefano discussed current risks emerging globally, risks and regulation, along with how to measure risk.

It was a pleasure to welcome Dr Stefano to campus. All our audiences that he spoke to were engaged and excited by the level of energy he brought to each session, which allowed for active collaboration and contributions throughout.

"The paths to a successful career in Finance is not a straight line. While technical skills are important, soft skills like communication, people management, teamwork are crucial. Try to be curious and eager to learn and ready to step out from your comfort zone”
