Huddersfield Business School will work with Kirklees Health & Care Partnership and Calderdale Cares Partnership to deliver two exclusive apprenticeships for current and aspiring leaders in health and social care, both of which will launch in September 2023.

On completion of the ‘Professional Manager Apprenticeship (Level 5)’, learners will be awarded the Certificate of Higher Education Professional. Learners on the ‘Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship (Level 7)’ will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Management. Both programmes will last for a duration of 13 months and applications close on 30 June.

The apprenticeships are open to roles that are clinical and non-clinical, and the content will be tailored and responsive to the needs of health and care leaders.  Both are fully funded by the Apprenticeship Levy, which was introduced in April 2017 for organisations with a wage bill of more than £3 million to invest in apprenticeships.

For employers who do not pay into the levy, the government will pay 95% of the course costs. This means that organisations can join the programmes at a reduced cost of £350 for the ‘Professional Manager Apprenticeship’ and £700 for the ‘’Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship. Additional support is also available to assist with these course fees if needed.

Dr Nicola Stenberg, Director of Executive Education within the Department of Management at Huddersfield Business School, says developing this strategic relationship with Kirklees Health & Care Partnership and Calderdale Cares Partnership is a proud moment for the School.

“By offering these two bespoke apprenticeship programmes,” said Dr Stenberg, “we can ensure that the content is tailored to the needs of the health and care workforce. We can also help to build closer connections and collaboration between the many organisations, in the public, private and third sectors, that form part of our local health and care system,” she added.

The programmes have been co-developed with health and social care employers to deliver the professional skills colleagues need and they also offer the opportunity to retain and develop talented colleagues from across the region, explained Brian Culleton, the University’s Director of Apprenticeships who added that he is “very proud of these apprenticeship programmes”.

The two programmes have stemmed from developing excellent relationships with Steve Brennan, Kirklees Place Programme Director and Jane Kirk, People Development Manager at Calderdale Council. They build on the experience of Huddersfield Business School in supporting professional development through apprenticeships and extend the University’s existing health apprenticeships offer.

Jane Kirk said Calderdale Council is excited to be part of the bespoke Apprenticeship Programme for leadership in health and care with the University and Kirklees Health and Care Partnership.

“Working to provide support spanning both health and care will only serve to enhance the support and care given to those who need health and care services. This programme will support leaders of today and tomorrow in health and care services across Calderdale and Kirklees.”

Steve Brennan believes the apprenticeships will play an important role in helping to develop the workforce, increase integration and joint working, and deliver better care and support for the people of Calderdale and Kirklees.

“These two apprenticeship-based programmes will provide exciting opportunities for our current and aspiring leaders to develop their managerial and leadership skills. They are available to staff working across all health and care organisations in Calderdale and Kirklees, including the voluntary and community sector, care homes, domiciliary care, community pharmacies, and general practice as well as the larger NHS, local authority and community organisations,” he said.
