The University’s Diamond Jubilee Lecture Theatre has reopened following a refurbishment that had sustainability at its heart and was partnered with local firm Camira Fabrics.

The Huddersfield Business School’s lecture theatre, in the campus’ Charles Sikes Building, was officially reopened by University Chancellor Sir George Buckley following an extensive revamp.

It now features new architectural wrapping, painted feature walls and newly upholstered seats. The fabric for the new seats was supplied by Camira, and is made from around 18,000 recycled plastic bottles salvaged from the seas around the UK.

The architectural wrapping is made by 3M, a company well known to Sir George following his years with them  as chairman, president and CEO.

The refurbishment is part of the University’s ‘10 Point Plan' towards achieving Carbon Neutral status for Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. Scope 1 emissions are those from sources directly owned or controlled by the University, while Scope 2 are those generated by use of energy bought from a utility provider.

Sir George, who was welcomed and introduced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan, followed the reopening by attending the graduation ceremonies taking place on campus throughout the week.

The University has recently collaborated with Camira, based in Mirfield, on investigating natural solutions to producing fire resistant fabrics with a more sustainable manufacturing process.

As well as a busy venue for teaching, the Diamond Jubilee Theatre is a popular venue for external events and lectures.
