THE National Student Survey (NSS) is one of the largest surveys of student satisfaction in the world. All final-year undergraduate students from UK universities are invited to take part in the survey which asks 27 questions about a range of factors related to their academic experience, including the teaching on their course, assessment and feedback, and how well courses are organised.
The University of Huddersfield is delighted with this year’s results, which recognise its teaching excellence and student experience. Following the challenge of remote learning during lockdown, students welcomed the return of face-to-face learning and Huddersfield improved in 26 out of the 27 questions.
Over 73% of students recorded highly positive views in the ‘assessment and feedback’ category. This excellent result supports the University’s commitment to world-class teaching, which was recognised with the first Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017. Huddersfield is also ranked joint second for National Teaching Fellowships, which mark Britain’s best lecturers in Higher Education.
The University of Huddersfield’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Jane Owen-Lynch, was delighted with the strong showing in the National Student Survey for assessment and feedback: “Students really appreciate the opportunity to discuss their work with tutors and to get detailed and constructive feedback”.
Since 2008, £156 million has been spent on campus development making sure students at Huddersfield have access to some of the best facilities in the country. With a vibrant social scene and a very active Students’ Union with more than 110 clubs and societies, it was very rewarding to see that 70% of students recorded highly positive views in the category of ‘student voice’.
Standout performances by individual courses at Huddersfield include Music, Primary & Early Years Education with QTS, Education & Professional Development, History, Economics, Optometry, Transport & Logistics, Mathematics, Music Technology, which all scored over 90%, for overall satisfaction. Geography and Interior Design both reached 100% for overall satisfaction, with ‘Geography, Earth and Environmental Studies’ ranking 1st at subject area level.
The 2022 results also show that Huddersfield is the best in Yorkshire in 14 subject areas, as well as being ranked in the top quartile in 17 subject areas.
