Double honours from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

The University's Department of Computer Science within the School of Computing and Engineering has received a double honour by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) after Professor Grigoris Antoniou was elected Fellow of the IEEE and head of department Professor Richard Hill was elevated to IEEE Senior Member, the Institute's second-highest grade

THE individual accomplishments of two professors within the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering have led to them receiving two of the highest accolades to be bestowed by the world’s largest institute of technical professionals and which is widely regarded as the trusted voice for engineering, computing and technology information around the globe.

IEEE Fellow Professor Grigoris Antoniou

The University’s Professor of Artificial Intelligence Grigoris Antoniou from the Department of Computer Science has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.  This high and most prestigious honour was awarded to Professor Antoniou for contributions to knowledge representation within artificial intelligence and to the semantic web.

Professor Grigoris Antoniou is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
An IEEE Fellow is recognised throughout the technical industry as an extremely prestigious and important career achievement and is a distinction reserved for select members whose extraordinary accomplishments are deserving of the esteemed grade elevation.

An IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership that can be conferred and is recognised throughout the technical industry as extremely prestigious and an important career achievement.  The IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select members whose extraordinary accomplishments within the Institute’s fields of interest are deemed fitting of the esteemed grade elevation.

Professor Antonio and his team of researchers have been global pioneers in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to diagnose mental health problems. His applied research activities around legal informatics and AI for health have been an important step in generating high-level impact in the real world.

“It is a huge honour to have received this award,” said Professor Antoniou, a globally acknowledged expert in AI.  “Following the nomination by another Fellow within the IEEE, the subsequent evaluation process is very rigorous,” he explained.

“In my case, nine leading researchers from around the world gave their detailed support for my nomination before it was reviewed by various committees.  Although it is a personal award, it reflects positively on the University and the work I have been doing here for almost a decade.

“I am particularly grateful to the collaborators I have had the opportunity to work with at the Centre of Planning, Autonomy and Representation of Knowledge (PARK) here at the University,” he added.

IEEE Senior Member Professor Richard Hill

The University’s Head of Department of Computer Science Professor Richard Hill, who is also the Director of the Centre for Industrial Analytics (CIndA), a research centre at the forefront of applied research into the visualisation and comprehension of complex data, is the second recipient on IEEE’s Huddersfield roll of honour.

Professor Richard Hill has been elevated to Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
Professor Hill has been elevated to the Institute’s second-highest grade of Senior Member; a professional classification awarded to only 10% of IEEE members.

Professor Hill has been elevated to their second-highest grade of Senior Member; which is a professional classification awarded to only 10% of IEEE members. Being nominated for senior membership is an acknowledgement by industry peers for the technical and professional excellence demonstrated throughout their careers.

One such accomplishment by Professor Hill has been the establishment of the Technical Institute at the University which he created to investigate data transfer for large scale scientific experiments in partnership with CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research.

The same technology is also being used to drive the development of the next generation of high-speed communication networks for Industry 4.0 applications.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest technical professional organisation for the advancement of technology with more than 423,000 members in over 160 countries around the world. Its objectives are the educational and technical advancement of electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunications, computer science and similar disciplines.

Collectively they inspire a global community through highly-cited publications, conferences, technology standards, as well as professional and educational activities which are united by a common desire to continuously learn, interact, collaborate, and innovate.
