Dr Gauthier de Beco’s, Reader in Law, was cited in and landmark judgement by the Indian Supreme Court (Patan Jamal Vali vs The State Of Andhra Pradesh - 27 April, 2021)

In a case concerning the occurrence of violence against disabled women in India, the Supreme Court hold that the testimony of disabled people should not be considered at an equal footing as that of non-disabled people. Relying on Dr Gauthier de Beco’s systems-based conception of intersectionality, it provided that it would wrong to focus on ‘a single axis whether it be caste, disability or gender’ by concentring on particular dimensions of oppression (para. 16). It thereby examines how to improve the criminal justice system with due regard for intersection of different grounds.
