Award-winning journalist and author Amelia Gentleman will discuss her acclaimed book 'The Windrush Betrayal: Exposing the Hostile Environment' in a free webinar on Thursday 24 June.

Amelia will be in conversation with Dr Berenice Golding, School Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Human and Health Sciences to discuss the book that followed her investigation into the government’s ‘Hostile Environment’ immigration policy.

Registration for this free event, which will take place on Zoom Webinar between 18:00 and 19:00 on 24 June, is open now.

The book, first published in 2019, documents the full story of Amelia's investigation into how “thousands of British citizens were wrongly classified as illegal immigrants, with life-shattering consequences”. The paperback version, published in 2020, has a detailed new postscript that brings things up to date.

Amelia was named Journalist of the Year in 2018 for her investigations into the Windrush scandal, and also won the Paul Foot Award, the Cudlipp Award and an Amnesty prize for the reporting. She has also won the Orwell Prize for Political Journalism, and Feature and Specialist Writer of the Year at the British Press Awards. 'The Windrush Betrayal' was shortlisted for the 2020 Orwell Book Prize and longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize. She previously reported from Paris and Moscow for the Guardian and from Delhi for the New York Times.

“I am looking forward to discussing Amelia’s book with her, having read when it was first published in 2019,” says Dr Golding. “I had previously drawn upon some of her Guardian articles that documented the impact of the hostile environment on the Windrush Generation in my teaching, so it will be interesting to hear her reflections on her work and the impact that it has had since.”
