Professor Parik Goswami will be speaking at the 2020 Functional Textiles and Clothing Conference, which will be hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi

A PROFESSOR at the University of Huddersfield is forming a close link with one the top educational institutions in India.  It is leading to research collaborations in the important field of technical textiles and there will be staff and student exchanges.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi is ranked as one of the world’s top 200 universities.  It plays host to the biannual Functional Textiles and Clothing Conference, a major international gathering.  Professor Parik Goswami – a leading expert in the field who is Director of the University of Huddersfield’s Technical Textiles Research Centre (TTRC) – is a member of the conference’s multi-national organising committee and gives a keynote address at this year’s event.

He has also developed a research partnership with IIT Delhi’s textiles department, which operates in a country that is one of the world’s largest producers and consumers of clothing.

Two Indian students who completed their Master’s degrees at IIT have relocated to the University of Huddersfield for fully-funded doctoral research supervised by Professor Goswami at the exceptionally well-equipped Technical Textiles Research Centre, which aims to establish its town and region as a world leader in textiles by harnessing the newest technology and manufacturing techniques.

One of the upshots of the new collaboration is that the PhD candidates will pay return visits to IIT as part of their research.  Also, there are plans for two IIT professors – Abhijit Majumdar and Amit Rawal of its Department of Textile Technology – to come to the University of Huddersfield as visiting professors.

The aim of the collaboration between TTRC at Huddersfield and its counterpart at the IIT is to arrive at sustainable solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the clothing and textiles industry in the UK and India.

Professor Goswami’s keynote address at the 2020 Functional Textiles and Clothing Conference – staged at the IIT – is titled Textile Functionalisation – a tool for sustainable topical innovations.

During his visit to India, he will also conduct a seminar at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Shiv Nadar University, a multidisciplinary, research-focused institution founded in 2011 and based in Uttar Pradesh.

During the Shiv Nadar seminar, Professor Goswami will discuss the opportunities and challenges of working within the field of technical textiles, which are relevant to a wide variety of industrial sectors ranging from clothing and medical products to electronics and aero engineering.
