Jason Mallinson

cave diver and University honorary award recipient

Jason’s talk – tomorrow, Tuesday 26 November – is at the invitation of the Huddersfield and Halifax Geographical Association in conjunction with the University’s Sustainable and Resilient Communities research cluster (part of SURGE).

Jason Mallinson is regarded as one of the most accomplished cave divers in the world and his exploits have led him to set distance and depth records in caves across the globe.

His talk for the Huddersfield and Halifax Geographical Association will concern the key role he played in rescuing the youth football team in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non Caves in 2018.

Jason, as a member of the British Cave Rescue Council, was one of a multi-national team of cave divers assembled to attempt the rescue of the Wild Boars football team and their coach, who were trapped in the cave system following flash flooding in the region.

For his contribution to the successful rescue of the youngsters, he received the Queen’s Gallantry Medal earlier this year and, in July, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Huddersfield.

His talk tomorrow evening, Tuesday 26 November, will be held in the Joseph Priestley Building in room JPG/18, starting at 7.15pm.  Admission to the talk is open to all and is free to GS members and students, and just £3 for visitors.

Further information about the talk can be obtained from the Branch Membership Secretary, Pam Cranmer, on 01924 508947 and details of the work of the Sustainable and Resilient Communities research cluster is available online.  Further information about the University’s Geography degree courses can also be found online.
