International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Friday 17 May

Created in 2004, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia - is observed on 17 May every year in more than 130 countries to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

The date of 17 May marks the anniversary of when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1990.  The day represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the stigma and discrimination faced by those who identify as LGBT+ in the world today.
