Professor Rupert Till’s research includes work in both popular music and music archaeology. This comes together when he performs ambient electronica under the stage name “Professor Chill”, performing live with his laptop and various bits of technology, and including recordings he has made of reconstructions of ancient musical instruments.

He is opening the Ash Stage on Friday 14th June, as well as giving a lecture on music archaeology.

2 days later he is performing again, this time at Yellow Arch Studios, a live music venue in Sheffield. The University of Huddersfield has many links with Yellow Arch, and studio co-owner Colin Elliot, as well as being an experience record producer, has taught production and arrangement to music students. Music Technology students have also worked at the studios for a number of years. As well as being the place where the Arctic Monkeys started out rehearsing, Colin has produced Richard Hawley’s albums here, as well as mixing Kylie Minogue.

On Sunday 16th June, Professor Chill is performing live at this Sheffield venue, on the same bill as electronica acts Marconi Union, Manchester’s Bing Satellites, and Wales’ Antonymes. Please see the facebook event.

The next day he reverts back to more normal university business, flying to Hong Kong to meet the Unviersity’s representatives there, before flying on to Australia. In Canberra he is presenting at the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) Conference, https://iaspm2019.com , where he is hosting meetings of the UK branch and IASPM’s Journal.  He then meets partners at the University of Sydney, before flying home.

Professor Chill can be found at https://professorchill.co.uk and Spotify. Later in the summer he will be appearing at the Samsara Festival in Hungary.
