Students' Union President
President of the University of Huddersfield Students’ Union Emmanuel Haruna has been appointed to the Student Strategic Advisory Committee of the Quality Assurance Agency
THE independent body that monitors and advises on standards and quality in UK higher education has appointed the President of the University of Huddersfield Students’ Union to one of its key committees.
Emmanuel Haruna has already attended one meeting of the Student Strategic Advisory Committee (SSAC) of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and there will be further sessions around the country during his first year as a member. He will then have the opportunity to extend his membership for a further 12 months.
Academic integrity and the prevention of fraudulence and cheating – such as the use of essay writing services – are among the issues that concern Emmanuel and he welcomes the fact that the QAA is campaigning on them.
“It is an excellent opportunity to represent not just Huddersfield students, but students in the UK’s HE sector as a whole,”
Emmanuel Haruna, SU President
SSAC meetings are attended by the Quality Assurance Agency’s Chief Executive and other members of the organisation’s board. The committee, which has some 21 members from across the UK, has influenced many aspects of the QAA’s overall strategy.
Emmanuel Haruna’s first degree was a BSc in chemistry which led him to the University of Huddersfield Master’s programme that dealt with oil and gas engineering management. Now, he is to embark on a PhD focussing on management.
He became the University’s SU President earlier in 2019, after serving a year as Education Officer. He worked on a project alongside Ruth Stoker, who is the academic lead for the University’s Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework and a former QAA Review Co-ordinator. She encouraged Emmanuel to apply to join the SSAC and after shortlisting, he was appointed to the role.
The University is one of only two to achieve a Gold Award in Yorkshire and the Humber
