On Wednesday 23 May the Occupational Health Department will be taking part in May Measurement Month, a worldwide screening initiative to highlight the need for increased awareness around blood pressure.  A registered nurse will be in the Schwann Building Atrium (outside the library entrance) from 10.00am until 2.00pm to take blood pressure readings and provide lifestyle advice to prevent high blood pressure.  There is no need to book, just come along anytime between 10.00am and 2.00pm for a 5-10 minute session with the nurse.

Why is it important?

High blood pressure is a silent killer.  It is the No.1 contributing risk factor for global death causing many cardiovascular complications.  But often people don’t even know they have high blood pressure.  There are no symptoms and some people only find out they have high blood pressure after they suffer a heart attack or stroke, or are diagnosed with something else, such as heart or kidney disease.

If your blood pressure could be putting your health at risk, we will advise you to see your healthcare provider as soon as possible.  We will also provide you with some information about blood pressure and how you can start managing yours today with some simple lifestyle changes.
