The University announces a number of internal promotions

THE University of Huddersfield’s Dr Andrew Longstaff and Dr Jess Power have received the conferment of Professor in recognition of their substantial contribution to research and teaching.

The position of professor is only conferred on an academic when a person’s research is considered to be substantial, innovative and of high quality, and is acknowledged nationally and internationally for its importance by fellow academics.  Before conferring a professorship on any of its staff, the University of Huddersfield seeks endorsement from leading academics from other institutions in order to verify the quality of the research.

Professor of Teaching and Learning, Dr Jess Power, joined the University’s School of Art Design and Architecture in 2012 initially as Director of Teaching and Learning and shortly afterwards became a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.  Earlier this year, Professor Power was awarded the status of National Teaching Fellow, one of her proudest moments.

Professor Power’s main area of research is interdisciplinary and throughout her career has brought together students and staff from many disciplines to engage in creating sustainable learning networks.  One of these is the Innovative and Creative Exchange (ICE) programme, a series of networking events, competitive challenges and lectures that has helped an array of students develop their employability and enterprise skills in a fast-paced flexible and challenging learning environment.

Dr Andrew Longstaff has been conferred the title of Professor of Machine Tool Metrology in recognition of his fundamental and applied research into machine tool and manufacturing metrology and error compensation, since joining the University as a PhD student in 1996.

Professor Longstaff specialises in the instrumentation, data acquisition and processing for advanced machine tools and manufacturing machines.  He is a core part of the University’s Centre for Precision Technologies.  He will now continue his work in the University’s EPSRC-funded Future Metrology Hub, which commenced in April this year.
