Mishti Khatri
Mishti graduated from the University of Huddersfield in 2020 and will return to Huddersfield in October 2021. We asked her about her experience at the University of Huddersfield.
Course: MSc. Sport and Exercise Nutrition
Why did you choose the University of Huddersfield?
I chose the University of Huddersfield as I found the course module intensive and relevant to helping me gain theoretical and practical knowledge
The course leaders, Dr. Liam Harper and Dr. Robert Naughton laid an emphasis on research work as well as gaining work experience which would help with placements later on.
The course was designed to achieve Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr) qualifications.
The campus and its facilities were another reason I wanted to study here.
What are you doing now?
I am currently working as a Sport Nutritionist and Personal Trainer in India, with a specialisation in rehabilitation and sport performance.
Did attending the University of Huddersfield help you grow as an individual?
Yes, I definitely grew as an individual. I was living away from home for the first time but the environment at the university and the town was welcoming and conducive to growth; on a professional and personal front.
Mishti Khatri - a successful sport nutritionistThe course structure broadened my perspective on nutrition and introduced me to a new way of learning. My interest in research has grown as well, and I will be pursuing a PhD in Applied Health Sciences with the fee waivering Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship at the University of Huddersfield.
How did you find the facilities like at the University of Huddersfield?
The facilities on the campus are remarkable, and the sports equipment allowed us to conduct a variety of experiments. I think I spent most of my time in the library and the Team Hud gym!
The library, a massive building, had ample place for group projects as well as individual work, with all the necessary material to support our courses.
The gym has a range of classes for all fitness levels, and it was a great place to meet people, especially as a new student. Even the student hub area and societies allowed for exploring different interests.
What was your favourite thing about Huddersfield?
The little creek/canal flowing through our campus was my favourite place to go for a walk.
I love that Huddersfield was so close to the Peak District, making hikes and scenic routes very accessible.
Will you return to Huddersfield?
Yes, I can’t wait to return for the PhD. I’m excited to start another chapter of my career and life at the University of Huddersfield.
What are your future career goals?
I aim to successfully complete my PhD, and work with athletes to improve their sport performance through nutritional aids. I also wish to continue researching.
What advice would you give to future Indian students attending University in the UK?
Don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there and seeking new experiences. There’s something for everyone at the University, apart from just studying, that will help you grow in different aspects. Teachers and other students are always there to help and assist you, so don’t be afraid to ask!

Shahnawaz Assad
Course: Master of Business Administration
Why did you choose the University of Huddersfield?
Location wise, I preferred the north of England. Huddersfield is pocket friendly for students (relatively cheap) and is located between two major cities of the north, Leeds and Manchester, with easy access to both.
The university has a plethora of courses available and the programmes are student-friendly. Being a gold-rated university for teaching excellence, students have easy access to all the faculty members who provide one-to-one support whenever needed. The diversity of the student community is remarkable and the campus facilities in terms of libraries, cafes and gyms are made seamlessly available to all the students.
What are you doing now?
I am working for National Health Service (NHS) as a Business Analyst.
Did attending the University of Huddersfield help you grow as an individual?
I believe growth is subjective. In my case, the whole idea of coming to England was to accustom myself to western values along with pursuing world-class education. Regular interaction with people from around the world opened my mind to new ideas and helped me attain a global outlook.
Shahanwaz Assad - Business Analyst at the National Health Service (NHS) The exchange of thoughts and information gave me a chance to compare and constructively criticise the different attitude that people have towards development, education, success as well as public rights in general. I definitely see the change in myself, however learning is a continuous process and I have miles to go before I sleep.

What are your future career goals?
To set up my own healthcare company.
What advice would you give to future Indian students attending University in the UK?
This is a golden chance as the Graduate Route programme or Post Study Work programme is now available to all students. Also, courses in the UK are for a shorter duration in comparison to India. Therefore, your route to success is quicker to reach and easier to achieve.
Sushmita Gudimella
The University of Huddersfield has excellent connections with global businesses. We spoke to Sushmita Gudimella,originally from Hyderabad, Southern India who graduated in 2019 with Computer Science BSc(Hons). During her placement she worked at Airbus and since graduating has landed a full time job with Airbus.
We asked Sushmita about her placement.
Why did you decide to do a placement?
One of the main reasons that I applied to Huddersfield was the opportunity to do a placement year in industry. The chances of getting a job are high when you do a placement in the UK, and the Placement Unit at the University helped me to prepare my CV, cover letter, and practice for assessment centres and interviews.
What did you do during your placement?
During my placement at Airbus, I worked in the Information and Communications Technology department as an Information Management Intern. I worked on software tools which were used to design parts of an aircraft. I worked on four major projects at Airbus, which included a software tool for designing the ribs present in the wings of an aircraft, and a tool to design the fuel tank. Both of these software tools were really complicated, and they were integrated with a computer-aided design tool called CATIA.
Did your work placement help you when you returned to university for your final year?
All the projects I worked on have helped me to develop my technical and interpersonal skills.
On my placement, my role was completely based on Python programming language, which I was able to learn and implement in my final year project when I returned to University, which was a collaborative project with Airbus.
What are you doing now?
I began working for Airbus in 2019, after I graduated from my course. My placement played a major role in securing a graduate job. Based on my performance during my placement year, my manager at the time referred me to the graduate scheme, providing strong evidence to the HR department along with my placement review form to show why I was eligible for the referral. This helped me in bypassing all the initial stages of the recruitment process for the graduate scheme and got me to the final interview stage. Based on my interview I was selected for the graduate scheme.
Sushmita Gudimella now works for aerospace giant AirbusI am currently in the second year of my graduate scheme. The scheme lasts for 2 years 3 months and during this time I get the opportunity to move across different departments in the form of short 3 – 6-month placements and learn more about the company, different ways of working and gain a variety of technical skills. These short placements provide a great change in environment and day-to-day tasks and helps my colleagues and I in pushing ourselves to our limits and to adapt quickly to changing environments. I am currently on a placement with Airbus Defence and Space and this has been a whole new experience. Throughout the week, 80% of my time goes into technical tasks and the remaining 20% goes into team meetings, business updates, personal development and STEM activities for example. This has really given me the opportunity to not only develop my technical skills but also enhance my interpersonal skills and business knowledge.
Would you recommend a placement?
I think doing a placement year plays a key role in providing a great start to your career. As a placement student, we can learn a lot about how companies work and how the technical knowledge attained from our degree can be applied in the real world. Based on my personal experience and the person I am today, I would strongly recommend anyone to choose a degree with a placement year.
My bachelor’s provided me with a strong foundation for all the technical tasks I perform on a day-to-day basis. In some areas, I am able to apply the theoretical knowledge I attained from my course in the real working world and it’s very interesting and exciting to see the practical application of the subject I learned. The placement year showed me the business side of the role and the differences between academic and business styles of working. I definitely grew as a person during my placement year, and I feel a lot more confident now. All of this has really helped me in adapting quickly to my current job and giving a 100 percent in everything I do.

Why did you choose the University of Huddersfield?
Before joining Huddersfield, I did a lot of research on universities and finally ended up selecting the University of Huddersfield for the following reasons. The University of Huddersfield is gold-rated for teaching excellence. It has been awarded many prestigious awards. It has also been awarded as the University of the Year in 2013 and its 1st in the UK for qualified teaching staff. The University of Huddersfield is equipped with the latest and modern facilities.
Also, the location, Huddersfield is a very safe town and economical place for a student to live. The majority of the big cities of the UK are very close to Huddersfield as it is situated in the middle of the UK.
What are you doing now?
After completion of my degree at the University of Huddersfield, I got a wonderful opportunity to join the University of Huddersfield India Office as Admissions Advisor.
Did attending the University of Huddersfield help you grow as an individual?
Yes, the University of Huddersfield will certainly help you grow as an individual. The experience you will get at the university will boost your confidence and will develop your personality. The University of Huddersfield provides great international exposure as well.

One of my favourite things about the University of Huddersfield is Student Central. This is the place on campus where I would often spend the whole day. This place is full of fun all the time and I really miss this place.
The campus is located in the Huddersfield town centre which is always full of cultural activities and lots of fun. The town is very beautiful and surronded by countryside.
What advice would you give to future Indian students attending University in the UK?

The course was my main choice the International Business with Tourism MSc caught my eye and Huddersfield was one of the few universities that offered this course.
What are you doing now?
Currently, I am working as a Senior Admissions Advisor, at the University of Huddersfield India Office.
Did attending the University of Huddersfield help you grow as an individual?
Yes, it definitely helped me. Studying at the University of Huddersfield gave me valuable insights into International Business, thanks to the expertise and experience of the course professors.
What was your favourite thing about the University of Huddersfield?
Late nights with fellow students at the library are my most cherished memories. We used to stay up late into the night, with coffee, discussions and fun.
