Nursing Research Matters – Mental Health Webinar

Professor Nick Hardiker has been in a research leadership position for over a decade. He is Dean of the University of Huddersfield's School of Human & Health Sciences.

Nick has over 25 years' experience of theoretical and applied research in nursing and digital health, with a particular focus on health records and nursing languages. Nick has previously held digital health leadership roles at the UK Royal College of Nursing and the International Council of Nurses and was for 10 years Editor-in-Chief of Informatics for Health and Social Care. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and the American College of Medical Informatics.

Professor Elizabeth Hughes is Professor of Nursing and Lead for Clinical Academic Careers, School of Health and Social Care, Edinburgh Napier University; Visiting Professor at School of Healthcare at University of Leeds; and Adjunct Professor at School of Nursing at La Trobe, Melbourne Australia.

Liz is a mental health nurse academic and has worked in addiction services and acute inpatient mental health. She joined the Institute of Psychiatry in 1999 and completed her PhD in 2007. She has published over 50 peer reviewed papers and been awarded over £4million as a chief investigator, and contributed to over £13million as a co-investigator related to her clinical and research expertise in improving outcomes for people with multiple needs and co-morbidities in mental health care.

Research at The Intersection of Sexual Health, Sexual Safety and Sexuality and Mental Health

Professor Mark Radford is Chief Nurse at Health Education England (HEE) and Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England. He is also one of HEE’s two Deputy Chief Executives. Mark has worked in perioperative, emergency and intensive care in the UK and Europe and was previously Chief Nurse of a University Teaching Hospital and Consultant Nurse in emergency and trauma care. Mark is Professor of Nursing at Birmingham City and Coventry Universities, and has published research on staffing, advanced practice, perioperative and trauma care.

Professor Fiona Nolan holds a joint appointment as Clinical Professor of Mental health Nursing with Anglia Ruskin University and Health Education East of England. She is current Chair of Mental Health Nurse Academics UK and also Chairs the UK-based Zimbabwe Life Project (ZLP) charity, which supports mental health workers in Zimbabwe.  She has led two NIHR grants and been co-applicant on several others. Most recently she led an EU funded project to develop post graduate mental health nurse training in Mongolia. The results from this programme will be used as foundational training for international recruits to nursing posts in mental health services throughout England.

She holds visiting professorships at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Western Sydney University and the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences. She was awarded honorary life membership of the Mongolian Nurses Association in 2019 in recognition of her services to nursing.

Nurse Led Research and Education in a Low Middle Income Country: The Mongolian Experience

Professor Douglas MacInnes trained as a mental health nurse in the 1980s and was awarded his PhD in 1999. He is currently Professor of Mental Health and has close working relationships with mental health services in Kent and South London. Recent research activity has included; examining older peoples experiences of forensic mental health services, a psychological intervention with active collaboration between users, carers and clinicians; the social networks of people with long-term mental health service use; introducing peer support workers into a mental health trust; and supporting prisoners with mental health needs.
