Department of Chemical Sciences

The University has delivered Chemistry courses for over 175 years, and we have a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students working in our laboratories with an excellent range of facilities. Alongside our MChem and BSc Chemistry degrees, we have a very successful suite of undergraduate degrees in Forensic and Analytical Science, and in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. We have also recently introduced a BSc (Hons) Chemical Engineering and Chemistry degree course and also have BEng and MEng degrees in Chemical Engineering. The Department of Chemical Sciences offers BSc, MSci, MChem, BEng and MEng degrees, integrated masters, taught masters, foundation courses and research degrees up to PhD. The Department is committed to the highest quality of teaching, making sure that practical knowledge underpins theory at every level of the degree programme.

Our research is thriving and expanding, and is class-leading in several areas. Research is carried out across the spectrum of chemical sciences from computational chemistry to cancer therapy. There are specialist laboratories for forensic science, chemical engineering, synthetic chemistry (organic and inorganic), catalytic testing, thermal analysis and calorimetry, kinetic measurements, chromatography and adsorption studies as well as a dedicated local computer cluster for modelling. The Department is supported by world-class instrumental facilities with mass spectrometry (incl. LC-MS/MS spectrometers with q-ToF & Ion Trap), SEM, well-equipped single crystal XRD facilities (including micro-focused single-crystal and powder XRD as well as small angle X-ray), EPR, analytical spectroscopy and analytical electrochemistry. This is supplemented by the recent purchase of new 600 and 300 MHz NMR spectrometers to go alongside our existing 400 MHz machine. Dedicated technicians at PhD level run the chromatography, NMR and MS laboratories.

Department of Biological and Geographical Sciences

Our portfolio of BSc degrees in the Biological Sciences currently includes Biomedicine, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, and Molecular and Cellular Biology, as well as a broad BSc Biological Sciences. Courses that incorporate a specific year-long research placement are subject to advanced accreditation by The Royal Society of Biology. The newest additions to the Department are our geographers and the provision of research-led BSc programmes in Physical and Human Geography. High quality teaching and the application of practical laboratory knowledge and integral within all our degrees.

Research interests in the Department are diverse with a range of newly refurbished laboratory facilities available to post-graduate, under-graduate, and post-doctoral researchers. Resource available includes cell culture suites for growth of mammalian cells and an assortment of microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes; an ancient DNA laboratory; plus confocal, widefield, and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. We also benefit from our close association with the Department of Chemical Sciences: our analytical biochemists and environmental scientists have available world-class instrumental facilities with regard to mass spectrometry (including LC-MS/MS spectrometers with q-ToF and Ion trap), an extensive range of HPLC and GC equipment, and newly purchased 600 and 300 MHz NMR spectrometers to go alongside an existing 400 MHz machine. Our protein biochemists enjoy the availability of a range of ÄKTA purification equipment together with access to well-equipped single crystal x-ray diffraction and small angle x-ray scattering facilities.

Department of Pharmacy

Our Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) is a 4 year undergraduate degree that leads to registration as a pharmacist following a further year of paid pre-registration training. It has been specifically designed to combine science and clinical practice in a supportive and career-focussed environment using a range of innovative and exciting teaching methods, with direct input from our registered practitioner pharmacists. Modern, purpose-built facilities with state-of-the art equipment mean we have a great teaching environment, and our students are taught by a range of people who have strong academic backgrounds and experience in the profession of pharmacy, as well as being experts in higher education. The opportunity to learn alongside other healthcare professions and our placement activities have always been highly praised by students and our partners.

In addition, the Department offers postgraduate research degrees supervised by renowned academic staff. These span a range of pharmaceutically relevant topics including cancer chemotherapeutics, drug delivery, pharmacoeconomics and pharmaceutical policy, molecular neuroscience, neuropharmacology, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical technology and materials and biopolymer science.

We also offer a suite of MSc taught courses with the Pharmaceutical Business Suite of courses, a CPD programme for pharmacy technicians, and also an Independent Prescribing course leading to qualification as an independent prescriber in a particular area of healthcare practice.
