Previous Green Weeks

Take a break from your desk* or studies, to experience ‘hands on’ reforesting an area of land within our community, and show you care about trees! You will also be giving yourself a chance to connect with nature, which is proven to help mental health, lower heart rate and reduce stress levels.

Transport, training, tools, trees and refreshments will be included. All that is required is to wear warm, outdoor clothing and sensible, robust shoes.

Attendees will return feeling refreshed and with a sense of achievement that their time has made a positive impact in increasing the amount of woodland in the Kirklees district for future generations.

This tree-planting is one way in which the University of Huddersfield is supporting Kirklees Council in achieving is climate change targets for the district.

(*Please note if you are a member of Staff you will need to get your Line Managers approval before signing up for the session).

Join Jack Edwards a Sustainability and Bush craft Champion, for a full demonstration on how to build a wooden bird box using recycled palettes, and then have a try yourself.

The bird boxes will create a safe space for a range of native bird species to shelter from the elements over winter, and hopefully raise a brood of chicks in over the spring/summer months.

If you like, you can then get creative to decorate and style up the box to add you own personal touch!

All tools and equipment will be provided.

Attendees can either take the boxes home to be hung up in your garden, or the University’s Campus Support Team have kindly agreed that the boxes can be hung up in the beautiful woodland walk area down by the canal, for all to enjoy and do a bit of birdwatching on your lunchbreak.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! We all know how important it is to take the time to recycle and dispose of your waste correctly, whether here at the University or at home.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the waste once it’s been collected? Well, now’s your chance to find out!

Join us on this fascinating tour, where we will start in the under crofts of the University with our own Waste Guru, giving you an overview of how the University’s complex waste streams are managed. We will then transport you to the SUEZ Waste processing plant to see behind the scenes of the materials recycling facility (MRF) and inside the furnace of the energy-from-waste (EfW) facility.

You will return waste wise and inspired to make positive changes to your own waste disposal habits.

Transport from the University to the waste processing plant and back again will be provided.

Please note, all attendees must wear flat, sensible footwear with a solid sole (not plimsoles) for the duration of the visit (for your protection).

Join our first Green Week lunchtime learning webinar!

'Fossil fuels are very precious but biofuels are the wisest choice'.

Dr Gina Javanbakht will discuss the impacts of pollution and fossil fuel recovery, and how this can be substituted with bio-fuel.  Learn about the complexities of producing bio fuel and the intensive green energy research which is being carried out at the University in our own 'Energy Integration Lab'.

Join Tom Armstrong, the University’s Head Chef in the Jo Cox More in Common Building, as he cooks up a storm, making a tasty, healthy vegetarian tagine, perfect to warm you up as the nights draw in, and freeze-able for another meal when time is short.

Attendees can ask Tom his top cooking tips, find out about his exciting catering career (including cooking at the House of Parliament) and then sample the final product!

All will be gifted with a special take away recipe pack containing all the herbs and spices required to make the meal (only fresh ingredients will need to be added), as well as links to other exciting winter recipes to make at home.

To wrap up our Green Week celebrations the University's Quiz Society will be running a fun, Friday night quiz on all things Sustainability!

Bring some friends, pick an amusing Quiz Team Name, and come and test your knowledge on 'The Big Sustainability Quiz!'

There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

All attendees will be given a special reduction at the bar for food and drink.

No need to book, just turn up in plenty of to collect your answer sheet and pen!
