Emma Dodd

Career Development and Employability MA (Distance Learning)

Emma completed a Career Development and Employability MA in 2024 while working full-time as an Employability Adviser at Sheffield Hallam University. She undertook a master’s to gain expertise in supporting individuals' careers. Emma was drawn to the coaching element of the course as developing this skill was essential for advancing to a coaching position.

Earning a degree through online study provided me with the flexibility to balance both my studies and work

One of the reasons I chose to study the Career Development and Employability MA at Huddersfield was because it presented the opportunity to study 100% online, so I could continue to work full-time as an Employability Adviser at Sheffield Hallam University. My studies needed to fit in with my work and personal commitments, and the course at Huddersfield seemed super flexible.

After meeting the Course Leader, Jodie Boyd, I was confident in my decision to apply as Jodie was extremely encouraging, passionate, and knowledgeable about career development. Studying the course not only meant that I could secure a master's qualification but also achieve my Qualification in Career Development (QCD) recognised by the Career Development Institute (CDI) giving me further creditability in the industry.

Advancing in my career because of the course

The course content was engaging and practical meaning I could quickly apply my learning to my workplace. I particularly benefited from the coaching element of the course. The module was assessed by undertaking lots of coaching practice, and the feedback I received meant that I could continuously improve throughout. From the feedback, I learnt that I tended to rush my clients’ appointments at the beginning and end of a session. I learnt to slow down and keep a calm and controlled demeanour throughout appointments to help my clients feel comfortable and deliver a better session overall.

I credit the module for my success in securing the role of Academic Success Coach at Loughborough University where, as part of the interview process, I was asked to do a live coaching session. However, because of all the feedback and practice I had gained throughout the course, I was able to hone all that I’d learnt, excel in the interview, and secure my ideal job.

Supportive and encouraging academics

Bob, Sue, and Jodie were fantastic - each had different teaching styles, but all were engaging and knowledgeable. I knew I was learning from experts in their fields! From the beginning, their commitment to student support was clear. The academics’ ongoing feedback throughout the course was invaluable and significantly helped me improve my grades.

Building my professional network

I thoroughly enjoyed the course as the lecturers made a real effort to encourage students to engage with each other, which is particularly beneficial when studying remotely. The course allowed me to meet other like-minded people who were passionate about career education from across the world and gain insights from my peers. Throughout the course, I also accessed various workshops, webinars, and the CDI website, which helped grow my network in the sector.

Practical application and transferable skills

The course was super practical – I could apply all the coaching and higher education knowledge from my degree at work daily. I loved putting into practice what I’d learned from my course, and I felt I could make a real difference in my workplace.

Not only did I gain skills and knowledge specific to my job role, but I also developed several transferable skills, such as organisation and time management. A high level of discipline, structure, and resilience were required to complete a Master’s while working full-time. I’ve since had the opportunity to manage staff in my role at Loughborough University and have been able to take a ‘coaching’ approach with my staff to help them develop too.

Beyond career services: the versatility of skills gained

Many of my classmates from the course pursued careers in roles related to career development, as the course is indeed geared towards that field, however, the course offers much more than just a pathway to a career in career services. The skills and knowledge gained are highly transferable and applicable to various roles, including coaching, facilitating workshops, or working in educational settings like schools, colleges, or universities more broadly.

Key career achievements and future goals in coaching

A big career highlight has been working as an Academic Success Coach at Loughborough University, where I’ve supported over 100 students with their study goals through coaching appointments and workshops. This has been exceptionally rewarding, and I’ve loved seeing students succeed.

The course ignited my passion for coaching for sure! By receiving feedback, and reflecting on my career guidance and coaching sessions, I was able to enhance my practice and build greater confidence in supporting others – and I plan to continue to develop these skills.
