Data Analytics MSc (Distance Learning)

Amro completed the Data Analytics MSc (Distance Learning) at the University of Huddersfield in 2024 while working as a Business Transformation Consultant within the Quality Engineering Practice at IBM, the largest industrial research organisation in the world.

The MSc covered a wide range of interesting topics that aligned with my interests

The course structure, which offered a good balance of key subjects across data analytics, attracted me to the Data Analytics MSc. I was drawn to the diverse range of industry-relevant topics including machine learning, data wrangling, and data visualisation, all complemented by a substantial amount of coursework where you could apply your learning. This hands-on approach appealed to me, as it allowed me to immediately put my learning into practice in my workplace. The SAS certification was another key benefit as it offered the chance to gain expertise with a well-known tool as part of the course, along with other well-known industry technologies.

Distance learning allowed me to learn while working full-time

Another significant advantage of the Data Analytics MSc was that it was delivered fully online, which was perfect for me as a full-time working professional. I could fit study in around my work and personal commitments spreading the workload across weekends and some weekday evenings.

The MSc equipped me with practical knowledge and skills that enhanced my work performance

My primary focus in my role at IBM is helping clients enhance their existing processes. While my role isn't exclusively centred on data analysis, data plays a critical role in every aspect of my work. The skills I gained from the course have enabled me to develop data-driven tailored solutions that improve efficiencies.

My goal has always been to deepen my knowledge in data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), and through this course, I not only achieved that but have also successfully applied what I learned to my everyday professional responsibilities. As an example, I was able to develop a custom application that provided useful descriptive analytics to my client, which is now being widely adopted. I gained a range of key skills from the course, including a solid understanding of data engineering concepts and diverse types of databases, along with hands-on experience in machine learning.

I learnt a range of practical programming languages and tools to benefit my clients at work

I learned new programming languages such as R and advanced Python, as well as tools like Apache Spark, SAS, and a variety of data visualisation libraries and UI frameworks. These skills have provided me with not only a comprehensive understanding of what these technologies offer but also the ability to determine how and when to apply them effectively. In my role, it’s crucial to identify which solutions best benefit my clients, as every situation is unique and a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works.

Huddersfield offered exceptional teaching and unwavering support

The quality of teaching was excellent at the University of Huddersfield. The lecturers were always accessible when I needed guidance and provided valuable support, especially when I faced challenges with deadlines, grasping certain complex concepts, or navigating personal difficulties. There’s always a helping hand at Huddersfield if you need it.
