Course Leader: MSc Chemical Process Engineering and Safety

Hi, my name is Thanos and I joined the University of Huddersfield in May 2016, and I am currently a Reader in Chemical Engineering within the School of Applied Sciences. I am the Course Leader for our MSc Chemical Process Engineering and Safety course, and the Module Leader for three modules on our BEng/MEng Chemical Engineering programmes. My teaching focuses on sustainable development and waste reuse, including modules such as Sustainable Industrial Systems, Process Integration and Computer Aided Product and Process Design. I have provided supervision across a wide range of projects for both taught and research students.

Research

My research interests focus on industrial symbiosis, waste reuse, environmental impact assessment, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and process modelling and simulation. I have authored more than 80 papers published in scientific journals or presented at conferences, with more than 10 of them focusing on life cycle/environmental impact assessment, technoeconomic assessment or scaling up of novel/real industrial processes.

Since 2016, I have secured competitively allocated funds as PI or Co-I of approximately £2M, from the European Union, AHRC, EPSRC, BBSRC and InnovateUK. I am currently the Principal Investigator from the University of Huddersfield for three EU-funded H2020 projects:

  1. "AquaSPICE - Advancing Sustainability of Process Industries through Digital and Circular Water Use Innovations", leading the task for the Life Cycle Assessment of water/wastewater treatment technologies;
  2. "FRIETS - Sustainable optimization of the value chain of added-value fresh and dried berries through the integration of Precision Agriculture management strategies and innovative dehydration and edible coating", leading the scale-up and modelling of project processes contributing to their Life Cycle Assessment;
  3. “THESEUS - A First of a kind Hub for circularity demonstrator for Attica and peripheral regions”, contributing to the tasks on the upcycling of post-consumer textile waste.

I have vast experience in the application of Life Cycle Assessment for the textile industry, through collaborations with with several organsiations within the textile industry. I am currently the academic supervisor of two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, which combine recent advances in the textile industry with Life Cycle Assessment.
